– Streampunk – Symbolism In Art: Comes The Dawn

Comes The Dawn

After a while you learn the subtle difference
Between holding a hand and chaining a soul,
And you learn that love doesn’t mean leaning
And company doesn’t mean security,
And you begin to learn that kisses aren’t contracts
And presents aren’t promises,
And you begin to accept your defeats
With your head up and your eyes open
With the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child,
And you learn to build all your roads on today,
Because tomorrow’s ground is too uncertain for plans,
And futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight.
After a while you learn
That even sunshine burns if you get too much.
So you plant your own garden and decorate your own soul,
Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure...
That you really are strong,
And you really do have worth.
And you learn and learn...
With every goodbye you learn.

I went completely with symbolism on this double spread.  I kept it pretty simple but it shows what the message is without a word other than “go”.

I have my reasons for everything on the pages.  It tells something without me having to tell you what it is about.  Seeing as how I shared one of my favorite poems, you can guess, pretty easily.  But, if you had not read the poem, you can see that the main message is still there.  Let me take you a little deeper into it, though.

The woman is metal.  Her heart is grinding and steaming away but there are so many gears (reasons she makes the choices she does) that…see the clock?  Time after time she made poor choices… and either sent them away and/or felt abandoned before she told them to go.  (the white knight rides away)  It was way easier, I might tell you, to just walk away herself and she probably should have said “Go!” rather than try so hard to make it work.

And so, the poem…  with each dawn she learned… dawn represents renewal, learning, healing… and there is the barren tree with her danged flowers on it.

Give symbolism to a them in your art journal.  Can you tell the synopsis of something you have read or some story you have heard, or something you have lived, through symbolism?
