Black Spruce and Hemlock: Medicine Trees

Two medicine trees belong to this month.  Black Spruce and Hemlock.

Black Spruce has a cluster of branches at the top that forms a type of crow’s nest.  The Carrier people used Black Spruce to make fish traps, other peoples made snowshoe frames and drying racks from Black Spruce.  Some used the resin from the tree on wounds to speed up healing.  The oil from the needles of Black Spruce was used in spiritual healing as a essence oil for massage.  It is a strong medicine tree.

The Hemlock is auspicious in that both Hemlock and Crow symbolized something negative; the symbol of sorrow yet, when the crow lands on its very top, it shakes off the snow from it to represent joy and hope.  The tree is a graceful tree with drooping boughs and soft needles and cultures saw them as wise elders embracing change easily.  It is not related to the hemlock poisonous plant, but only because when the needles are crushed, they have the smell of the hemlock plant.  The tree is not toxic at all.

During this time of great change. We need to remember to maintain our grace, without fear or anxiety, and with us going with the flow.  It can be a challenge, right now, to relax and not be rigid.  Stop trying to control things.  Loosen up and remember to take life as it comes as it should be right now, with grace and ease.
