Sprung
Spring airs her dirty laundry
allows curry and comb to etch
a desire to conquer cling
of last season’s burgeoning business
bad propositions stir in minds most complex
least hesitant hatred warps into muddy composition
old habits poorly formed fray into a frenzy
of misguided and misled deep dark plans
and while we work
somewhere a salacious whisper threatens
like red snake to indifferent skin
that denies dangerous deeds could befall
to leave us no more than tattered tree leaves
floating to a wasted world
knee-dig pockets of waiting soil
yawns in soft near-resistant stretch
to waken to this whittle and rain-spittle urge
to begin to prepare to produce
what makes a woman feel is neatly necessary
and while she shovels
mingled breath rises against silt of city sky
pushing through plastic bone-crushing to crypt
as if, a fired signal, full of steely bolt and nuts
bursting through exhilaration scribing misguided anger
against facades that leave stains of heroism
and clouds of horror collude to mar collective consciousness’
she strips ragtag remnants of late guest leaving
scoops out scrub and shrub festooned with fall’s frenzy
to bring order to her first birds that are harbingers
to this thrust to be other than what was meant
its wildness trampled and tamed to fit her prying purpose
to weave string and wire and rope for potential runners
and while they run
damned destruction full of cliché cautions
rule wherein feet are placed and are frozen still
as a split screen pause for we are unable
unwilling and unable to bear next frame
slow green tongues lift up from a recent dying
to reach to warmth that comes when soft sunshine
can reach their lowly beds and warm winds
and where her heart and hands reached to love them
give them reason to rise amidst the rubble
and for this, we rise; we draw up our courage
and our unwillingness to stop what brings us joy;
like her we are sprung spring
we rise
