Gourds can be hard to find, but happens there is a lady here that buys many and sells them at the outdoor market in a town nearby. O’s mother picked a bunch up for us. We have used four and have one more swan necked one and four small prickle looking ones.
A light sanding will take off all the rough spots. It is very important to wear masks because the stuff growing on the gourd is black mold, typically, but it is that that gives the marbling if you want to do a natural gourd. There are many patterns to be seen in googling gourd art and images and you go from there. I chose a fairly easy one for the kids to do.
The hat fits on a swan neck gourd. I found them at Walmart in the Christmas section, for 1.97 each. But you could make your own and stuff it to get it to stand up.
We used acrylics and did a white wash, on these, as a base.
