Feathers are universal symbols in Indigenous artwork. Soe things you can not describe with words. How does a feather feel to the touch? Can you describe that in words? Oh! But you can describe it through art. I had ten students tonight and every one of them were able to define how a feather felt to them, through color, through layers of paint, through shape. The first exercise was give shape to what a feather looked like to them. The second was to use color to define the feel of a feather, to them. The third exercise was to give shape to the feeling of a feather. They all took each challenge and turned out some beautiful artwork. Their final project has to be finished next week, but, you could have heard a pin drop in the group as they were “head down” in search of meeting the challenges. They produced some beautiful artwork.
These are some of their feathers from last night. Next class they do the outlining in black and we frame them.
After they finish their feathers, I am doing an instruction on beginning Whimsical Portraits, as requested.
I am posting their work in the main Facebook area.
