Sister Turtle represents Mother Earth, healing, wisdom, health, safety, longevity, protection and continuity. Some cultures believe that Turtle dove down into the sea and brought up mud on her back so that the Americas could be formed. The symbol of the turtle is found in many cultures that had turtles in their environment. The Americas, to many of these cultures is Turtle Island. Turtle shells can be found made into rattles, for healing and other ceremonial activities. In many cultures, the turtle shell is used to dispense turtle medicines.
Her slow movements symbolize the patience that it takes and she can seal herself inside her shell to remind us that we can protect ourselves. The spirit of the turtle is feminine and she is said to provide protection for women. She is resilient and so are women.
She represents fertility and motherhood. It is said that the turtle saved mankind from the great flood and in this, she symbolizes the many burdens that women carry. It is interesting to note (although I never showed this in my painting) that many turtle species have their underside divided into 13 sections to represent the thirteen moons.
Since the turtle spirit is considered feminine, perhaps we ought to know her better. 13 is the celestial number for womanhood in many cultures. Her number 13 is divine and brings good luck and we should embrace it often. It brings about good change in us to have that number around us
How can you put the number 13 in your life, in your art journal?
