The southern and Northern Hemispheres switch places. The journey of the Universe is also the period of struggle between darkness and light, life and deaths (in its many forms) within us.
It seems sudden that the skies are gray and dark comes earlier, and you feel it almost like dread. The body, mind, heart and soul know cold is coming and suddenly you want anything to comfort you. Each system prepares for the change in the Universe. Equinox comes and we should always be prepared for it, like our grandmothers of old.
The body needs more Vitamin D, we become more tired. Our skin suddenly seems to become dry winter skin. We start to feel colds coming on because our immune systems are more prone to failing. You tend to be more headachy.
You are not as sharp as you were in summer, intellectually. Those that are prone to Seasonal Affective Disorder will begin to feel it. Mood is difficult to regulate. Joints begin to hurt more. Stress is less easily to handle. You will feel more distracted as you simply want more of something but you cannot really name it except sadness that warm summery weather has gone and the dread of cold of winter.
Preparing to den in and transform into our winter selves is not always easy. We are, unconsciously, connected to the cycles of Mother Nature. It is a time to consider the growth we have made, lauding the accomplishments we had and continue to be more aware of our body and Mother Nature, even the Universe being one. There is growth. There is harvest. There is death and there is rebirth. This is the time to honor all you have in life and instead of counting our problems, to count things we have to be grateful for. We have the ritual of thanksgiving coming up. We are making room for what will come this newer season. We are being offered the silence of nature for this season, to consider our inner spaces, places and people that sustain us. Become creative. Listen to the gentle urging of the Muse. Empty out cluttered things in your life so the next seasons will be easier and fresh and new and ready to be the canvas of “This is the Fall me and this shall be the Winter Me”. Compost old ideas and use the energy you have for more visions and more complex inner life.
I will be doing art journaling/painting/creating memories for the month of October. I hope you follow along with me as we edge into this new season.
