Symbolism of the Dragonfly

“I can still only see a dragonfly, its wings as thin and light as silk and its body the color of rainbow. But on the wings of this dragonfly I take off and fly, for my soul carries no weight. It is our bodies – these borrowed vehicles of flesh and bone – that weigh us down. Our spirits are eternally free and invincible.” – Daniela I. Norris

When we were overnight in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, on our holidays, we sat in the backyard and were overwhelmed with the number of beautiful golden dragonflies.  When I commented n it, we were told that the city used dragonflies to contain the mosquito blight.  They were such gorgeous ones, as well, and thousands in a small area we were sitting in.  They darted and skimmed.  They road waves of air we could not see.  They seemed to be curious about us and hovered near each of us.  I knew them to be messengers and I needed to delve into the symbolism of them in order to decipher what they meant to tell me.

We are living in ways that we could not have fathomed, during Covid19 epidemic.    We have no magic and need miracles to survive, let alone live a full and potent life.  There are no illusions, but lots of conspiracies.  Rue keepers keep rules and non-rule keepers do not.  People who procrastinate, procrastinate.  People who are always looking for excuses will find excuses not to follow the rules.  We see them all.  In fact, some of us are some of those kinds of people.  We are a danger to self and others, but, because we do not believe in the sciences, we tend to waiver.

Dragonfly reminds us to challenge our old perceptions and to break un-useful habits.  When winds of life are unsettling, sometimes we need to watch our guides for mapping.  Dragonfly is a water being so now that water is healing to you, that, if you happen upon a dragonfly, or dream of such, you are reminded to go to water. Work with that element.  She also reminds us that life is short and to ride the currents with joy and beauty.  Don’t lose your joy.

When you discover that a path you are on does not bring you Joy.  Be the dragonfly that can turn and ride higher or lower, or land and rest.  It is perfectly okay to change directions, to change your mind, to change anything about yourself.   Walk your talk and talk your walk.  You are unique and the world has need of your Joy.

You are air and water.  Dragonfly is about rebirthing, about change, about being creative in your being here at all.  To live a full life is to change, to adapt, but beautifully so.  Be that!
